Forest Care - Defensible Space & Fire Mitigation
Starting in 1998, a defensible space plan was developed for each lot within Castle Pines Village. Defensible space is a zone of 30-100 feet around your home where vegetation has been thinned and enough space has been created for fire apparatus to work safely and to slow down the spread of fire.
The width of the zone will vary, depending upon the topography of your property. If your home is on a hill, you will need a wider zone on the downhill side because fire spreads more easily and quickly uphill.
Guidelines to help keep your home safe from a wildfire:
- Thin trees so that there is at least 10 feet between trees.
- Prune tree limbs to a height of 10 feet off the ground. Cut limbs that overhang your roof.
- Remove flammable materials from under wood decks.
- Thin oak brush and other ladder fuels – grass, weeds or brush that can spread a ground fire into the trees and from trees to homes.
- Remove deadwood and slash piles.
- Keep gutters free of needles and leaves
