Civic Work Project: East and West sides of Gate 3, Aug 1, 2005

Have you driven by Gate 3 lately and noticed the new look?

Several years of planning have gone into the completion of landscaping at the gate and we think the Garden Club can be very proud of it’s contributions to the beautification of this area.

The Garden Club collaborated with Castle Pines Village Parks and Recreation and the Homeowners Association working with a landscape architect and landscaper to gain the various approvals and bring the plan to fruition.

Mark Larson, General Manager of CPHA was instrumental in pulling together the various committees to complete the job on time.

The Garden Club contributed $3,000.00 from money raised in previous years and then added approximately another $3,395.00 from fundraising done in 2005. Castle Pines HA added the remaining funds to complete the project.

Sue Navaro, 2004 & 2005 Civic Development Chairman headed up the project for the Garden Club and Carol Hummel and Marion Clark added their expertise as the project neared completion.

The following parameters were established as guidelines to design the landscaping development:

The Goal: Design should have a natural look that is compatible with the surroundings

· Design should incorporate plant material that conserves water

· Design should make use of CPV Approved Plants

· Design should add plant material to create winter interest

· Design should be affordable and within budget

· Design should appear completed

· Design should be low maintenance

We are hopeful that this project will set precedence for landscaping projects at the other gates. The heavy use of dwarf conifers rather than the preponderance of perennials should keep these beds looking interesting year-round. This is the first large cooperative project undertaken by our club. Hopefully, the Garden Club can lend its expertise to design and plant material selection in future projects throughout the Village.

Linda Gruber is our new Civic Development Chairman is already putting together plans for the coming year and she will be looking for volunteers to assist her. We will continue to maintain the gardens at Hummingbird and Borealis and the bed in front of the guard shack at Gate 3. Think about getting involved in some of these exciting projects.
